The effect of social interaction on knowledge and attitudes toward the elderly: For middle school students in Gangbuk, Seoul

Abstract
Objective : As the elderly population increases, there is a need for mutual positive perceptions between young people and the elderly, who will become obligated to support in an aging society in the future. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out how the social interaction between the two generations affects the knowledge and attitude of adolescents toward the elderly.

Methods : After surveying 384 middle school students, the relationship between study variables was analyzed through a reliability test, frequency analysis of demographic variables, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis.

Results : There was a significant negative perception of the elderly, and there was no significant difference in exchange experience and empathy with the elderly according to gender, religion, main growth area, and economic level, but there was a difference in liking the elderly generation, and 1km of residential elderly facilities. Knowledge and attitude toward the elderly showed no significant difference in religion, main growth area, and economic level, and there was a difference in liking the elderly generation, and in the case of knowledge, there was also a difference by gender. Attitudes toward the elderly showed a positive correlation between exchange experience and empathy, and knowledge and attitudes toward the elderly showed a positive correlation.

Conclusion : The higher the exchange experience and empathy, the higher the knowledge and attitude toward the elderly. Therefore, more opportunities for social interaction should be provided to the youth. It is necessary to establish a system and education so that young people can recognize that the elderly generation is a cooperative relationship that lives together in the same era through interactive interactions such as education or volunteer activities.
